While wearing braces there are some changes you’ll have to make to your regular routine - and this includes making some changes when playing sports. While there aren’t any problems with continuing to play sports, you’ll have to take an extra precaution before you start. As your trusted Gurnee, IL orthodontist and orthodontic team, we want to make sure that all of our patients are aware of how vital it is to wear a mouthguard.

About Mouthguards

While there are certain sports that require everybody to wear a mouthguard (football, hockey, and lacrosse), we recommend that patients with braces wear a mouthguard when they play any sport that has the potential for physical contact. This includes sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball. Mouthguards can protect you in a variety of different ways, not only limited to protecting your teeth. They’re actually capable of preventing concussions and they can also keep you from accidentally biting your own tongue or lips.

Pick an Orthodontic Mouthguard

While wearing a mouthguard is always important for sports that can involve physical contact, if you’re wearing braces, you’ll want to pick out an orthodontic mouthguard to wear. Orthodontic mouthguards (sometimes referred to as “braces mouthguards”) are made of high-grade silicone instead of the hard plastic that regular mouthguards are made of. These mouthguards are also larger than traditional mouthguards (to accommodate a patient’s braces) and they feature rubber flanges that go under the lips to prevent them from being pushed into the brackets. This will provide extra protection to a person with braces and help prevent damage being caused to a patient’s teeth, mouth, and orthodontic appliances.
