October is National Orthodontic Health Month, and with Halloween right around the corner, Dr. Kattner of Kattner Orthodontics wants you and your children to safely enjoy this treat-filled holiday season with a couple of helpful tips. We know many of our patients in the Gurnee, Beach Park, and Zion areas enjoy the tradition of trick-or-treating, and Dr. Kattner and his staff want you to take pleasure in the festivities all while protecting your orthodontic appliances. For those of you who wear braces, we recommend that you take a few precautions, as we want patients to avoid having a “spooky” smile filled with broken brackets and wires. Halloween Treats To Avoid

Say “Boo” to hard and sticky treats this Halloween season. These foods can get stuck in brackets and cause damage to your braces and your teeth. Beware of:

 

  • Nuts

  • Licorice

  • Jelly beans

  • Hard pretzels

  • Gum

  • Candy corn

  • Lollipops

  • Caramel

Braces-Friendly Halloween Foods

Your ghoulish evening doesn’t have to be treat free. Sink your teeth into:

 

  • Peanut butter cups

  • Ice cream

  • Gelatin

  • Kit Kats

  • Plain M&M;’s

  • 3 Musketeers

  • Oreo’s & Soft Cookies

  • Hershey Bars & Hershey Kisses

  • Candy Bars without caramel or nuts

Your don’t want your orthodontic health to be a scary affair, so be sure to brush and floss after your outings on Halloween. It’s essential to get rid of any food particles that have been left behind in your braces, which in turn with help prevent tooth decay.

Braces-Friendly Halloween Recipe

To help you abate those Halloween cravings, here is a braces-friendly recipe to insure that you have a thrilling Halloween, even if you are undergoing orthodontic treatment!

 

Spooky Boo Brownies by TBSP

Makes 16 servings

 

Ingredients:

 

  • 1 box brownie mix

  • Water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on brownie mix box

  • White cake frosting (from 16-oz container)

  • 16 large marshmallows

  • Black food decorating gel (from 0.68-oz tube)

Directions:

 

  1. Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Line 8- or 9-inch square pan with foil so foil extends about 2 inches over sides of pan

  2. Make brownies as directed on box for 8- or 9-inch square pan

  3. Cool completely, about 1 1/2 hours

  4. Cut into 4 rows by 4 rows

  5. Heat frosting in microwavable bowl uncovered on High 30 seconds

  6. Top each brownie with 1 large marshmallow. Spoon 1 tablespoon frosting over each marshmallow to coat. Let stand until frosting is set, about 30 minutes.

  7. Use black gel to make eyes and mouths.
