early-orthodontic-care.jpgAs your trusted provider of orthodontics in the Gurnee, IL area we’re more than happy to offer our compassionate orthodontic care to patients of all ages – even the youngest ones in your family. Early detection of orthodontic problems is important because many conditions are more comfortably corrected in a young patient versus an older patient. For this reason we enthusiastically recommend that you bring your child in to see us at Kattner Orthodontics at an early age.

When Should a Child First Visit an Orthodontist?

It’s recommended that a child’s first visit to an orthodontist be around the age of seven. Seven is the perfect age for your child to see his or her Gurnee, IL orthodontist because this is about the time when the adult molars will erupt and establish the back bite. When the back bite is established we’ll be capable of evaluating a child’s front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. This will allow us to determine if your child has any orthodontic problems, which include, but aren’t limited to, underbites, overbites, and crowding.

Of course, an early visit to the orthodontist and an early screening doesn’t always mean early treatment. Some patients won’t actually need orthodontic treatment. In other cases, a patient may need orthodontic treatment, but we’ll simply monitor your child’s oral development and wait to start treatment until there’s a more opportune time.

What Are the Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment, also known as interceptive treatment, is meant to catch orthodontic issues before they get worse and at an age when they are easier to correct. Early treatment will also simplify any future orthodontic treatment shortening the amount of time a patient will need to spend in braces later in life. It will likely even save you some money as well. Some of the ways that early orthodontic treatment can help a child is by:

  • Making space for crowded teeth.
  • Maintaining space for permanent teeth to erupt.
  • Reducing the chance of trauma to protruding front teeth.
  • Influencing jaw growth in order to improve facial symmetry.
  • Reduce the need for tooth extractions.
